My Story
I was in my mid-thirties and I was broken.
My digestion was wrecked, my energy was gone, my weight had dropped, and every professional I saw told me to keep doing the things that were already failing me. What made it worse was that I thought I was doing everything right — for my health, for my body, for the planet. I was wrong. And the more I struggled, the more I feared I was never going to feel like myself again.
Then everything changed.
I was introduced to a community built around an ancestral approach to health that nobody in my mainstream world was talking about. I engaged breathwork and cold exposure for the first time under proper guidance and my nervous system shifted in a way I had never experienced — like something that had been stuck finally let go. I started fueling my body with real, whole foods the way humans actually evolved to eat. My hormonal health came back online. My energy came back. My physique was restored and I became stronger than I had ever been — not just physically but mentally.
That is when I was ready to try something I would never have attempted at my lowest point. Something most people my age would skip without a second thought.
Jiu Jitsu. This chapter of my life and training certainly came with a plethora of new challenges, lessons, and discoveries; fortunately I had a solid foundation for health practices to facilitate my growth on the mats. With every injury came new awareness and adjustments to both my training style and my personal jiu jitsu game. Without an honest assessment of what midlife training has to be to achieve consistency, I’d be another one of the majority of midlife grapplers- gone. I’ve seen more of my training partners be forced to quit when they could not adapt, and this in my opinion is the most unfortunate and frustrating aspect to training any combat sport in midlife. A solid approach simply must dismiss the ego, adopt deliberate recovery, and engage lifestyle choices that facilitate being an outlier for our demographic. Consistency over Intensity and Longevity over Temporary Victories, THIS is foundational.
I am 47 now. Purple belt. Training 5 to 7 sessions a week at one of the most competitive academies in South Florida. I have had fewer injuries than a lot of guys half my age, and my jiu-jitsu is genuinely better now than when I was relying on athleticism to survive. The cold plunges, the ancestral nutrition, the deliberate recovery — they are not protocols I follow anymore. They are the life I have built.
I do not share any of this because I have all the answers.
I share it because when I was 35 and broken, I wish someone had been having this conversation. I had to find it the hard way, piece by piece, through the right people at the right moments.
That is why I am here.
That is who this is for.
